I was out on a walk on this beautiful New England Autumn morning and the blue sky, the brisk breeze, the ocean smell made reflect on the important things in life and how much we get entangled and distracted by the daily race, going nowhere and acquiring things that we, in many case, don’t need…we forget that the really important things in our lives are the ones we can’t buy, they are the ones we were all born with, we all have the potential to attain, regardless of how much or how little one might have, respect, love, health, family, our children, friends, happiness, honesty, loyalty are the truly important things that money can’t truly buy.
The precious things in life are not the ones we possess yet we slave ourselves to have all the possessions we can handle, plus some, and assume that with all those perks we will be happier… all in detriment of the real values and important life treasures. Possessions are confused as sign of power, success, even if in order to obtain those same possession we have given up the basic ingredients to be truly happy and fulfilled.
Many sacrifice their families, their friends, their dreams, their character, their happiness in benefit of having more and better possessions than the next person, a bigger house, a better car, an expensive suit, a fancy watch that keeps track of the time not lived….for many, the simple thoutght of lacking such possessions freezes them, make them play dead to remain ‘alive’…. so much wasted time in life with insignificant things that will all be left behind.
While walking this morning I was wondering if all was to end tomorrow, that life as we know at this very second was to change, drastically change, that we would be all leaving to another planet, to another country, to a new life…. and there is just one thing you can bring with you in your carry on….what would that be?
What is the thing that you could not live without? What is so important that you would use the only available space to bring something to start anew? How about all the other things that robes your family and loved ones from your attention, caring and attention?? So, you are telling me that you are spending time, precious time that will never come back again denying your loved ones to quality and meaningful time for something that is not ‘that’ important?
Maybe it is time to review our priorities, to figure what is truly important and focus on the people who love us when things are good, bad or even down awful, that are loyal even if we don’t have a fat bank account, people who accept us, even when we are broken, people who love us for who we are. Maybe it is time to give this love back and leave the things that are not ‘that’ important and focus on the things and people who are really irreplaceable in our lives.
